When deciding if bariatric surgery is right for you, it can be difficult to discern between the two most common procedures. Both gastric sleeve surgery and gastric bypass surgery are permanent procedures offering rapid weight loss, increased metabolism, and a controlled appetite. However, opting for sleeve surgery over bypass can provide you with more long-term benefits.

Characteristics of Sleeve Surgery:
· Can be done as outpatient surgery
· Operation lasts 1 hour or less
· If insurance does not cover the surgery, it is a cheaper out of pocket cost
· Minimal, if any, long-term complications post-op
· 75% of stomach is removed, leaving a “sleeve”
· Theoretically reduces the hunger hormone

Contrasting Characteristics of Bypass Surgery:
· Operation can last nearly 2-3 hours
· Can lead to stricturing and ulcers
· Can cause an internal hernia
· Can create dumping syndrome, causing you to feel nauseated, dizzy, or bloated if excess sugar, fatty foods, or carbohydrates are consumed

Both sleeve and bypass surgeries require permanent lifestyle changes. Before you decide one on, be sure you have educated yourself about the dietary and activity restrictions following either surgery. You will need a strong network of support for your post-operative physical and emotional needs.

Though a newer procedure, gastric sleeve appears to offer a similar weight-loss profile to gastric bypass. Safe and effective, it will allow you to lose weight gradually and adjust to your new body, providing a greater emotional benefit.

Ultimately, you should make a decision based on your current health and your doctor’s recommendation for which procedure is best for you.
