Frequently asked questions often come up when someone is feeling anxiety or doesn’t understand something fully. I receive these often in my practice and always like to try and re-assure as well as inform patients with my answers. Today, I want to share with you three of the most common questions I receive along with the answers I give to them.
How can I achieve the most success as I prepare for my weight-loss surgery?
I like to tell my patients there are a few key points that will help you be successful. The first key is sticking to the diet planned out for you. When you first come to us and decide to move ahead with surgery, you will receive a packet. This packet encompasses all the information you need to be really successful. Adhere to it, and your success will be more achievable in the long run. Success isn’t easy, but with support and consistency, you’ll be able to attain it!
I also tell my patients that exercise post-surgery is key. People often assume that exercise after surgery needs to be very simple and easy. But the truth is that exercise that is effective really needs to make you sweat. The key to this is exercising to a level that makes you huff and puff enough that you can’t hold a conversation while you are doing it.
What are the complications of weight-loss surgery?
There are a few complications that have the potential to arise post surgery.
  • The first is nausea. This is common within the first week after surgery and generally goes away after that period.
  • The second is the risk of a leak. This is talked about far more commonly than it actually happens. In terms of percentages, a leak occurs in 1% of surgeries performed and is fixable if it occurs.
  • The third is bleeding. This is a risk and a possibility, but we take every precaution to keep this specific complication from happening.
  • The fourth is the risk of a pulmonary embolism. Because of this risk, we factor in medication post-operation to lower the chances of this happening.
How many surgeries have you completed?
In my years of being a surgeon I have performed well over 2,000 bariatric procedures.
