The Gastric Bypass operation divides and creates an upper part of the stomach and then reroutes the intestines to that part of the stomach. This approach restricts food from entering the stomach and lengthens the time it takes for food to reach the digestive enzymes. As a result, patients don’t absorb all of the food that is eaten, giving it a malabsorption component.
On average, Gastric Bypass patients experience 60-80% weight-loss of their excess weight. Weight-loss is typically very rapid for Gastric Bypass patients.
Short-term complications include staple line bleeding or leaking. Long-term complications are many and include stenosis or ulceration and hernias. Additionally, nearly three quarters of all patients have a stress reaction to sweets which may lead to nausea, vomiting, bloating and diarrhea.
Hospital stays tend to be two nights for Gastric Bypass patients. Patients can usually return to work 1-2 weeks after the procedure.
