For the Gastric Sleeve procedure, a large section of the stomach is removed and sealed. As with other surgical procedures, this method helps restrict how much patients eat, but avoids many of the other issues that arise when introducing a foreign body (i.e. Lap-Band).
On average, Gastric Sleeve patients lose 60-70% of their excess weight. Weight-loss typically occurs much faster than other procedures like the Lap-Band.
There are a few complications that may arise for gastric sleeve patients including bleeding, staple line leak and an overly restrictive sleeve. To avoid many of these issues, Dr. Fass inverts the sleeve. Â Fortunately, there are no long-term problems associated with the gastric sleeve procedure.
Hospital stays for the Gastric Sleeve procedure are usually minimal as they are either done outpatient or on a one night stay. Patients can usually return to work 1-2 weeks after the procedure.
