Life After Surgery: Is Pregnancy Possible?
Your body has undergone a lot of changes from the time you began considering surgery to the days following the actual procedure. You’ve been dieting, poked and stapled. You’re on multiple vitamins. You’re trying to maintain a healthy diet with a side of hearty exercise. Your life has changed dramatically.
At this point after surgery, you may still have a few questions. How will your life look different in the days and weeks and months to follow? Will your social life be affected? What about work and your daily routine? And what about family planning?
That last question is one we hear a lot from patients just like you. Female patients are often concerned about their ability to conceive and have a baby some day following surgery. They worry that weight loss surgery has crippled their fertility. Don’t worry, ladies! The opposite is actually true! Losing weight will actually increase your fertility and your chances to conceive.
We recommend waiting one year after surgery before getting pregnant. As you know by now, your body has experienced a lot. Right now, your top priority is cultivating a healthy lifestyle. When the time comes to conceive and carry a baby, you’ll want a strong, healthy body that can support another life.
For the next year, get serious about your lifestyle. Exercise every day and make sure your meals are full of protein and vegetables. Eat larger meals instead of grazing and snacking throughout the day. Start running in the evenings after work or join a gym and take a spin class with a friend. The more work you put in on the front end, the better life will be in the long run. Work hard now and who knows? This time next year, you could be pregnant!
